We grow environmental leadership through education and advocacy work. We work for the biological and cultural diversity that sustain the environment.
Together with other environmental and animal welfare organizations, we join in educating the public about animal welfare and the environment. We lead campaigns against dolphin captivity and in enlightening the public about the cruelty of keeping intelligent animals such as dolphins and other marine mammals for human amusement.
We partner with communities in promoting grassroots environmentalism. We are always in solidarity with farmers, fisherfolk and indigenous peoples in defending environmental resources.
We are active in campaigns against the continued use and propagation of single-use plastics, marine pollution, and conversion of water resources to land use – such as the reclamation of Manila Bay. These greatly affect the country’s ecosystem.
In this spectrum of environmental issues, Earth Island Institute Asia-Pacific puts its focus on marine wildlife. And at the fore of this is our advocacy for protecting marine mammals and their habitat.
To date, there has been very little action in convening the management agencies and implementing the plans laid out by scientists to save the last remaining Irrawaddys of Negros. The dolphins continue to die on an average of one individual per year. Help us save the Irrawaddy dolphins in the Philippines by signing our petition.

Marine Wildlife and Marine Mammals
In this spectrum of environmental issues, we put our focus on marine wildlife. And at the fore of this is our advocacy for protecting marine mammals and their habitat.
Dolphin Safe
In 1986, the IMMP developed a campaign to press tuna companies to end the practice of intentionally chasing and netting dolphins with purse seine nets and to adopt “dolphin-safe” fishing practices to prevent the drowning of dolphins in tuna nets.
David Brower
Earth Island Institute was founded in San Francisco, USA in 1982 by well-known American environmentalist David Brower. Together with other visionary and dedicated environmental activists created a nimble, streamlined organization to support the work of bold individuals with big ideas on how to restore, preserve and nurture the environment.
International Marine Mammal Project
The IMMP leads the global effort to stop the slaughter of dolphins, end commercial whaling, end the use of driftnets and other destructive fishing practices and to protect key whale and dolphin habitats.
Dolphin Safe Monitoring Program
In the Philippines, Earth Island Institute implements the International Monitoring Program (IMP) which monitors the biggest tuna companies in the region, ensuring that fishing operations conform to the highest standards of sustainability.
